When knowing his son got a C grade in the maths exam, the father was proud and cheerful. This is the tear-jerking moment when a proud father is captured on camera celebrating his son's exam result.
After setting up the hidden camera, the boy calls his father to the kitchen, telling him in a whisper 'I've just got something from school; I need you to come and look at it.' His father, who can be heard shouting from elsewhere in the house, asks 'Has something happened?', to which the naughty teenager, Aria, replies 'Yes! It's really important'. As his nervous-looking father approaches, Aria says 'Come and have a chat with me. Just come in, and read that', he says while passing over a piece of paper displaying the result.
After seeing his son has achieved a C grade in the maths exam, the man asks 'Is that veracious?,' before bursting into tears of joy. The pair hug before the disbelieving dad asks again, 'Are you sure? They've not made a mistake? I can't believe it; I just can't believe it!'
A mere year before the video was filmed, the schoolboy received an F in the subject. He explained,'In England you need a C to basically do anything with your life. I've never been amazing academically and have struggled through school. Neither me or my dad or my teachers thought I was going to get my C, for me it was tough. When I told my Dad who means the world to me this was his reaction...Enjoy'.
Still feeling happy from the news, his delighted father tells him 'You're set for life! You're set for life!'. The teen is seen smiling into the camera at the end of the video, seemingly as thrilled with the result as his emotional father.

More and more corporations are taking an interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR). CSR is made up of three broad layers. The most basic is traditional corporate charity work. Companies typically spend about 1% of pre-tax profits on worthy projects. But many feel that simply writing cheques to charities is no longer enough. In some companies, shareholders want to know that their money is being put to good use, and employees want to be actively involved in good works.
Money alone is not the answer when companies come under attack for their behavior. Hence the second layer of CSR, which is a branch of risk management. Starting in the 1980s, with environmental disasters such as the explosion at Bhopal and the Exxon Valdez oil spill, industry after industry has suffered blows to its reputation.
So, companies often responded by trying to manage the risks. They talk to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and to governments, create codes of conduct(行为准则) and devote themselves to more transparency(透明)in their operations. Increasingly, too. they, along with their competitors, set common rules to spread risks.
All this is largely defensive, but there are also opportunities for those that get ahead of the game. The emphasis on opportunity is the third layer of CSR: the idea that it can help to create value. If approached in a strategic way, CSR could become part of a company's competitive advantage. That is just the sort of thing chief executives like to hear. The idea of "doing well by doing good" has become popular.
Nevertheless, the business of trying to be good is bringing difficult questions to executives. Can you measure CSR performance? Should you be cooperating with NGOs and you’re your competitors? Is there any really competitive advantage to be had from a green strategy?
Corporate social responsibility is now seen as a mainstream. Big companies want to tell the world about their good citizenship with their devotion to social responsibilities. Done badly, CSR is often just window-dressing and can be positively harmful. Done well, though, it is not some separate activity that companies do on the side, a corner of corporate life reserved for virtue(美德):it is just good business.

Across the world, mobile phones are very popular with young people. They think that the phones are more than a means of communication — having a mobile phone shows that they are cool and connected.
The explosion in mobile phone use around the world has worried some health professionals. Some doctors are concerned that in the future many people will suffer from health problems because of the use of mobile phones. But mobile phone companies say that there is no proof that mobile phones are bad for health.
On the other hand, why do some medical studies show changes in the brain cells of some people who use mobile phones? Signs of change in the tissue (组织) of the brain and head can be detected with modern scanning equipment. In one case, a traveling salesman had to retire at a young age due to the fact that he couldn’t remember even simple tasks. The man had been talking on his mobile phone for about six hours a day for a couple of years. His family doctor blamed his mobile phone use.
What is it that makes mobile phones potentially harmful? The answer is radiation. High-tech machines can detect very small amounts of radiation from mobile phones. Mobile phone companies agree that there is some radiation, but they say the amount is too small to worry about.
As the discussion about their safety continues, it appears that it is better to use mobile phones less often. Use a normal phone if you want to talk for a long time. Use your mobile phone only when you really need it. Mobile phones can be very useful and convenient, especially in emergencies. So, for now, it is wise not to use your mobile phone too often.

Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
While contact between adolescents (between the ages of fifteen and nineteen) and their peers (同龄人) is a universal characteristic of all cultures, the nature and the degree of such contact vary a great deal. In American contemporary society, adolescents spend much more time with their peers than with younger children or adults.
This pattern of age segregation(隔离) in American society did not become usual until the beginning of the industrialized society. Changes in the workplace separated children from adults, with adults working and children attending school. The dramatic increase of mothers in the workplace has further contributed to the reduction in the amount of time adolescents spend with adults. School reform efforts during the nineteenth century, which resulted in age-segregated schools and grades, have reduced the amount of time adolescents spend with younger children. Finally, the changes in population are considered a factor that may have contributed to the emergence of adolescent peer culture. From 1955 t0 1975, the adolescent population increased dramatically, from 11 percent t0 20.9 percent. This increase in the number of adolescents might be a contributing factor to the increase in adolescent peer culture in terms of growth in size.
Research supports the view that adolescents spend a great deal of time with their peers. Reed Larson and his colleagues examined adolescents' daily activities and found that they spend more time talking to their friends than engaging in any other activity. In a typical week, high school students will spend twice as much time with their peers as with adults. This gradual withdrawal from adults begins in early adolescence. In sixth grade, adults (excluding parents) account for only 25 percent of adolescent social networks. Another important characteristic of  adolescent peer culture is its increasingly autonomous (白治的) function. While childhood peer groups are conducted under the close supervision of parents, adolescent peer groups typically make an effort to escape adult supervision and usually succeed in doing so.

As we enjoy the summer ocean waves along the beaches,we may think nervously about Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and the great fear that sharks inspire in us.Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem.
Sharks,in particular, are“in’’these days. Thanks to good public policy and famous stars such as Jackie Chan and Ang Lee,killing sharks for fin soup is no longer cool.
The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction(灭绝)-up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins. But we have started to reverse the trend, particularly in many areas of the United States and overseas where restaurants once proudly provided delicious shark fins on the menu.
In California,a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations.
Overseas marketing and public efforts featuring posters on public transportation systems and TV ads have been underway for the past few years. These efforts all show signs of success, on both the supply side and the demand side of trade in shark fins.
Actually, stopping the killing of sharks is part of a broader movement to stop the killing of wild animals and the buying and selling of wildlife products. These products come from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos, besides killing marine life.
Whether it is shark fin soup or ivory piano keys, killing animals is big business. The hunting of elephants in search of ivory tusks for luxury(奢侈的)goods has become a fall-scale war.The decrease of African elephant populations is alarming. Together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.

There is no doubt that people with good interpersonal skills have an advantage over others. Some people are born with these skills —they can just handle other people better than the rest. While some are blessed with this talent, others can acquire it over time. Here are a few tips to help you improve your interpersonal skills:
Get over yourself. If there is one thing that stops us from growing, it may well be the ego(自我). We are not always right, but we usually do not like to hear others say that we are wrong. We need to keep our egos well in check so that we do not miss out on other’s constructive criticism. Once we have this done there is little to stop us from getting ahead in life.
Get to understand others. Everyone knows this is not easy, especially when someone is trying to get you to look bad. But do try and put yourself into the other’s shoes. There is much to be learned from this.
Listen more than you hear. How often do we see people fighting their verbal selves to be able to be heard at the table? Let us choose to be one among those who listen, and not just hear. Even an animal can hear. A human should be able to hear, understand and respond to the other people around.
Practice is everything. Just as with all other things, working on your interpersonal skills calls for a bit of practice. Trying to be polite to your very close friends and family is a great place to start.
Once you put your mind to it, then that is half the battle won, and you will soon see your relationships __________ over time.

[1]It is believed that in such a competitive age, art education is close to an unnecessary part in schools today. However, most of the advantages that a student would gain out of a basic education in art are almost unbelievable.
[2]There has been years of research involved in the importance of art education and what art education goals are. The studies prove that what students gain out of an art education is almost unbeatable, where any other course is concerned.
[3]Motivation, inspiration and concentration are some of the most prominently recorded benefits that a young student can get from taking education. For a young person’s personal growth and development an education in art is something that is considered to be very important as changing the way one looks at the world.
[4]A child whose parents are rich will naturally and very often be exposed to art, whether it is in the form of art pieces hanging at home or visits to fashionable art museums etc. This has again been seen over the years by researchers. At the same time, it has been noticed that exposure to art is something that is very distant for children who belong to families with little money and they end up spending their childhood without forming any connection with art.
[5]Art education goals in school therefore should be that ________ the wonders of art should be given to all students, whatever age group and whatever their family backgrounds are, because one never knows where talent might be hidden.
[6]However, art education goals have been slipping away from our education system for more twenty years now as people have begun to pay less importance to the requirement of art in their children’s lives. The reasons for this could be stressful budgets as well as stuffing of curriculum in classrooms s part of State mandates. Whatever these unfortunate reasons are, people have to once again realize art education goals and how they can actually be helping each student.
