2. Language points: while…, as…, faster than, the fastest, the most regularly, more slowly than…

Step One Revision

Translate some phrases by using ‘between…and…’, ‘from…to…’ and ‘before, after, until’

Step Two Pre – task 1

Explain that ‘while, as’ mean ‘at the same time as’. We use them to talk about two or more actions that happen at the same time.(It is important to learn this topic)

Step Three While – task 1

1 Ask four students to read out the four examples on page 67 and spend more time to explain them. Ask some able ones to give their own sentences and put forward their own questions.

2 Write the following on the board:

As I opened my eyes, I lost my wallet.

While I washed the vegetable, a postman ran out of the door quickly

As I walked past the post office, Mum prepared the chicken

While I was shopping, I saw my mother standing at the end of my bed

3 Ask students to match the two parts of the sentences and then read out and write out the sentences.

4 Explain the context of the exercise at the top of page 68. Millie is asking Daniel about what he did last night. Ask students to read through the conversation for allover meaning and complete with ‘while and as’.

Step Four: Post-task 1

Act out

Students read the completed speech bubbles and the teacher divides the class into groups to role-play the conversation.

Step Five Pre – task 2

Give students some examples using adjectives comparatives and superlatives

e.g., Sandy is beautiful. / Lily is more beautiful. / Lucy is the most beautiful.

Yesterday was hot. / Today is hotter. / Tomorrow will be the hottest.

Remind them most adverbs ends with –ly: carefully, badly, easily, seriously, late, fast, etc..

We use the same structure as when we compare adjectives.

Step Six While – task 2

1 Tell students to look at the picture in part D and identify which came first, second and third in the race.

2 Go through the grammar table at the top of page 69.

3 Explain the context of the exercise at the bottom of page 69 and ask students to complete it on their own.

Step Seven: Post-task 2

Ask students to give examples using comparatives and superlatives.

Step Eight Homework

Do some exercises.

Review Grammar C&D and preview the next part.

Grammar C D

C Using ‘while’ and ‘as’. 运用while和as.

while和as是时间连词,“当……时候”; 表示事情(动作)同时发生。

※当连接同时发生的两个长动作时,常用while。

e.g. While Millie was watching TV, Eddie was sleeping.

※当连接同时发生的一长一短两个动作时,用while或as引导时间较长的动作。这个长动作在时间较短的动作发生之前就已开始。

e.g. While Eddie was sleeping, Hobo went to watch TV.

As mother was cooking, Mary went back.

※当连接同时发生的两个短动作时,常用as。

e.g. As you see him, give him this letter.

※注意: while和as引导的状语从句在时态上必须和主句保持一致。

D Comparatives and superlatives (of adverbs) 副词的比较级和最高级

副词的比较级和最高级与形容词的比较级及最高级的构成方法相同,即单音节和部分双音节副词在词尾加“er”、加“est”构成比较级和最高级;多音节副词在副词之前加more和most 构成比较级和最高级;以后缀ly结尾的副词要用more和most。

e.g. fast – faster – fastest

early – earlier – earliest

late – later – latest

beautifully – more beautifully – most beautifully

slowly – more slowly – most slowly

quickly – more quickly – most quickly

另外还有不规则副词的比较级和最高级:

e.g. well – better – best

   badly – worse – worst

much – more – most

little – less – least

far – farther – farthest

e.g. Sandy runs faster than Amy.

Daniel draws the most carefully in our class.

Step Four: Post-task 1

表示时间的介词短语 between … and … ; from … to …

between … and … 和 from … to … 都表示一段特定的时间

between … and … 表示“在…和…之间”

before “比……早一点的时候”,“在……之前”;

after “比……迟一点的时候”,“在……之后”。

until “直到……的时候”。

e.g. Let’s wait until the train stops. 让我们等火车停下来吧。
