(A)
Many power plants(工厂) burn coal to heat the water. Coal is a main cause of air pollution. Another kind of way of making electricity is clean. That is geothermal (地热) energy. Geothermal energy is a kind of natural heat from the inside (内部) of the earth. Much of the earth's heat comes from its inside.
Making electricity at a geothermal power plant is easier. Most of them use hot water. The power plant usually gets the hot water under the earth's surface of one or two miles through the earth's rocks. There are different kinds of geothermal power plants. One kind is that the power plant has to get the hot water from the inside of the earth by itself. Most geothermal power plants in use are this type. Another kind is that the steam rises out of the ground all by itself. The geothermal power plants have been making electricity for California since 1960.
In 2009, seven U.S. places had geothermal power plants making electricity. In California and Nevada, there are fifty plants found. The United States leads(引领) the world in making electricity from geothermal energy. Although only several power plants use the way to make electricity, scientists are looking for ways to make better use of the earth's geothermal energy. We hope in the future more and more homes will be able to use this clean renewable energy source.

Air pollution is mainly caused by factories, power stations and cars. The chemicals in the smoke from power stations can cause much damage(毁坏). They can travel hundreds of miles in the wind before falling to the ground in the rain. And this “chemical rain” slowly destroys trees in the forests and makes fish die in the lakes. In Germany, it destroyed about 50% of the country's trees in 1986.
Time and time again there a lot of serious accidents polluted the air. In 1986, a serious accident happened at a nuclear power station in Russia. A cloud of radiation(放射线) flew across the whole Europe. It is said that 25,000 people died in Russia because of illness caused by this accident.
In 1984, there happened a serious accident at an Indian factory and a cloud of dangerous gas covered the town of Bhopal. More than 2,500 people were killed that night, and hundreds of people got injured(受伤的). A large number of the injured lost their sight.
