Step Ⅰ. Greetings and Revision.

Greet the class as usual. And check the homework. Ask some students to read the sentences they have made using “where” “from” and “live”.

Step Ⅱ. 3a

T: Look at the chart on the blackboard in 3a. There are some country names. What languages do they speak in these countries? Do you know? In some countries people only speak English, in some countries people only speak Chinese, and some people speak both English and Chinese. For example, people in Singapore speak both Chinese and English. Please write the names of the countries where people speak Chinese on the left and write the names of the countries where people speak English on the right. If people speak both Chinese and English, you can write the names of the countries on the middle. Now you can have a discussion in groups of four.

Suggested answers:

Chinese: China.

English: the United Kingdom, Australia, the United States.

Chinese and English: Singapore.

Step Ⅲ 3b Pair work

T: First I’ll ask two students to read the conversations.

S1: This is my new pen pal.

S2: She’s from Australia.

S1: What language does she speak?

S2: She speaks English.

T: Now work in pairs. You and your partner, one can pretend to have a pen pal from a different country. You can use the country names and the language names from 3a.

(This activity provides guided oral practice using the target language.)

Step Ⅳ 4 Quiz Name That Place!

T: Now let’s play a game. First I’ll tell you how to play this name.

We’ll make some preparations for this game. Now I’ll divide you into several groups. These groups will make up a ten-question quiz about cities and countries like this in the first picture.

Then these groups will ask other groups these questions. Now you can look at the conversation shown from a group will ask a question. One person from the other group will try to answer. If that person is right, the group can shout “yes!” if the person is wrong, the group can shout, “No!” understand?

As the groups play the name, move around the room. Check on this progress and answer questions as needed.
