The latest United Nations report on the AIDS spread paints a sad picture. It concludes that the regions of the world most affected by AIDS will experience rapid increases in deaths among young adults. This will have serious social and economic results.

The spread of AIDS and the virus that causes it, HIV, is particularly destructive in Africa. It is estimated that in sub-Saharan Africa, over twenty-four million adults and children are now living with HIV. In sixteen sub-Saharan countries, according to the UN, at least ten percent of the people between the age of fifteen and forty-nine are HIV positive(阳性). In South Africa and Zimbabwe, half the people between those ages may die of AIDS. In Botswana, about one in three adults is infected, and some two-thirds of the country's fifteen-year-old boys may die before they grow up.

As a result, agriculture, business, education, and health care are already suffering serious loses. The United States is spending millions of dollars to do it. Funding is being used for prevention campaigns and to make AIDS treatment more affordable. Money is also being used to reduce mother-to-child transmission rates; support home and community based care, and provide care for children orphaned by AIDS. The Peace Corps will soon make an all out effort to bring AIDS education to the countries most at risk. It is important that the governments and citizens of those nations most affected by AIDS do their part to fight against it. Some, like Senegal and Uganda, have already begun programs for disease prevention. These countries are experiencing falling or stable HIV rates and less suffering. But for other nations, much remains to be done.

D. In Botswana, one-third of the grown-ups are infected by AIDS

Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.

The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.

“We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.

“Within the heart there are millions of cells(细胞) that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the ageing process.”

What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s.

“This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink.

They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease.

The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart, said Goldspink.

The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.

64.The text mainly talks about ___________.

A. men’s heart cells B. woman’s ageing process

C. the gender difference D. heart health and long life

65.According to the text, the UK scientists have known that ___________.

A. women have more cells than men when they are born

B. women can replace the cells that enable the heart to beat

C. the female heart loses few of the cells with age

D. women never lose their pumping power with age

66.If men want to live longer, they should ____________.

A. enable their hearts to beat much faster

B. find out the reason for ageing

C. exercise regularly to keep their hearts healthy

D. prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller

67.We can know from the passage that ____________.

A. the reason why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart has been found out

B. scientists are on the way to finding out why the male heart loses more of the cells

C. the team has done something to prevent the male from suffering the greater loss

D. women over 70 could lose many more heart cells than those at the age of 20

In the U.S., people prefer waiting for a table to sitting with people they don’t know. If you are sitting at a table with people you don’t know, it is impolite to light up a cigarette without first asking if it will disturb them.

At American restaurants and coffee shops you are usually served tap(水龙头) water before you order. You may find the bread and butter is free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill.

Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing times for stores or restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in large cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day.

Servings in restaurants are often large, too large for many people. If you can’t finish your meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask your waitress or waiter for a “doggie bag”. It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you’re taking the food for yourself.

Supper and dinner are both words for the evening meal. Some people have “Sunday dinner”. This is an especially big noon meal.

Tips are not usually added to the check. They are not included in the price of the meal, either. A tip of about 15% is expected and you should leave it on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a check is brought on a plate and you put your money there. Then the waiter or waitress brings you your change.

56. What is served before you order?

 A. Bread. B. Butter. C. Coffee. D. Cold water.

57. What do American people always do when servings are too large for them?

 A. They take the food home with a doggie bag for their dogs.

 B. They leave the food on the table and go away.

 C. They take the food home with a doggie bag and enjoy it later.

 D. They ask the waitress or waiter to keep the food for them.

58. Sunday dinner is __________.

 A. a big meal at noon B. a big supper on Sunday

 C. a dinner in the evening D. a supper on Sunday

59. Which statement is NOT mentioned in the passage?

 A. People wouldn’t like to sit with strangers at a table.

 B. If you order a cup of coffee, you may get another one free.

 C. A 15% tip in large cities means you are satisfied with service.

 D. Servings in restaurants are too large for many people to finish.
