Conversation 1

M:Where did you put my new blue tie?

W:It’s right there in the cupboard with your other ties.

M:There’s a green one and a couple of brown ones, but no blue one.

W:Here it is in your drawer. You must have put it there when you brought it home.

M:I suppose so. We’d better hurry up or we’re going to be late. The Johnsons said to come at 7:30.

Conversation 2

M: My boss told me never to go to work again.

W: I can’t believe it. Why?

M: I don’t know. When he told me that, I was so confused.

W: Did you usually go to work late?

M: Well, I often did.

W: When you did your work, did you think about other things?

M: Sometimes.

W: Could you use a computer?

M: Yes, but only QQ for chatting. I can also use a typewriter.

W: Well, I think I know why. You didn’t use your time well, and you didn’t learn new things.

Conversation 3

M: Oh, it’s already half past ten now. I haven’t finished my paper yet.

W: Don’t worry. The clock on the wall is twenty minutes fast.

M: Great! Please tell Alice to wait for me till 11 o’clock.

W: Where are you going?

M: We’re going to Sally’s birthday party.

W: When will it be?

M: It will be at about 12 o’clock in the Rose Restaurant.

Conversation 4

M:Hello, Mrs Smith. I’m from the Daily Mirror. And I’m doing a report on public opinion about the city bus service. So, what do you think of the bus service?

W:The bus service? Actually I don’t use it that often unless I have to go shopping.

M:What’s… how could the bus service be improved?

W:Well, they could turn up on time. I mean you look at the timetable and you think, oh, well, five minutes to wait, and it turns out to be an hour.

M:Do any other people in your family use the bus service?

W:My husband. He uses it more often. But fortunately a girl who works in his office often gives him a lift to work. But when he does need to use it, he’s often angry at it. Once, he waited up to fifteen minutes at the station for a bus. So I think there should be some way of warning people when a bus is not going to arrive and certainly much more frequent bus services.

Conversation 5

M: My watch always gains ten minutes a day.

W: That’s funny. My watch always loses ten minutes a day.

M: No kidding?

W: I’m serious. Every morning I set my watch by the radio, but it still loses ten minutes.

M: You know what you can do?

W: Throw it away and buy a new one?

M: No. You only need to put your watch ahead ten minutes every day.

W: So you put your watch back ten minutes each day?

M: Yeah, that’s what I’m doing.

W: Oh, it takes too much trouble. Just buy a new watch. It doesn’t cost much. Besides, I just can’t put up with this thing any more.

Conversation 6

W: Oh, I’m fed up with my job.

M: Hey, there's a perfect job for you in the paper today. You might be interested.

W: Oh, what is it? What do they want? M: Wait a minute. Uh, here it is. The European Space Agency is advertising for translators. W: The European Space Agency? M: Well, that’s what it says. They need an English translator to work from French or German. W: So they need a degree in French or German, I suppose. Well, I’ve got that. What’s more, I have plenty of experience. What else are they asking for? M: Just that. A university degree and three or four years of experience as a translator in a professional environment. They also say the person should have a lively and inquiring mind, effective communication skills and the ability to work individually or as a part of the team. W: Well, if I stay at my present job much longer, I won’t have any mind or skills left. By the way, what about salary? I just hope it isn’t lower than what I get now. M: It’s said to be negotiable. It depends on the applicant’s education and experience. In addition to basic salary, there's a list of extra benefits. Have a look yourself. W: Hm, travel and social security plus traffic expenses are paid. Hey, this isn’t bad. I really want the job.

Section B

At one time the only danger on the roads was from wild animals. Now the roads are full of cars, trucks and buses. They are as dangerous as the wildest animal. There are also many more of them.

Every day people are killed while crossing the road, most of these people are old people and children. Old people are often killed because they usually cannot see or hear very well. Children are killed because they are careless. They forget to look and listen before they cross the road.

A car, truck or bus cannot stop very quickly. If the car is going very fast it will travel many meters before it stops. A person who travels on foot in a street does not always understand this. They think a car can stop within a few meters. The faster a car is traveling, the longer it takes to stop. It is very difficult for a walking person to know how fast a car is traveling. He may think it is going slowly when it is going very quickly.

The only safe way to cross the road is to look both ways, right and left and right again. Then if the road is clear, it is safe to cross. The correct way to cross the road is to walk quickly. It is not safe to run. If people run across the road, they may fall down.

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and required words limit.

Junior Achievement is an international movement to educate young people about business and economics. It has helped many of them succeed in a world economy since it was founded.

The organization is the largest of its kind. JA Worldwide says it reaches over eight million students each year in more than one hundred countries. Programs begin in elementary school and continue through middle and high school. The education is based on the ideas of market-based economics and entrepreneurship.

Junior Achievement began in 1919 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Two business leaders, Horace Moses and Theodore Vail, joined with Senator Murray Crane of Massachusetts to start it.

For more than fifty years, Junior Achievement programs met after school. They began as a group of business clubs. The organization started with a number of children of ages ten to twelve.

But in nineteen seventy-five, Junior Achievement began to offer classes during school hours. Many more young people joined the organization once it began to teach business skills as part of the school day.

Volunteers from the community teach about businesses, such as how they are organized, and how products are made and sold. They also teach about the American and world economies and about industry and trade.

The Junior Achievement Company Program teaches young people how entrepreneurship works. They learn about business by operating their own companies.

The students develop a product and sell shares in their company. They use the money to buy the materials they need to make their product, which then they sell. Finally, they return the profits to the people who bought shares in the company.

Junior Achievement says two hundred eighty-seven thousand volunteers support its programs around the world. In the United States alone, there are more than twenty-two thousand places that hold Junior Achievement events.

Junior Achievement Incorporated and Junior Achievement International combined their operation in two thousand four. They formed Junior Achievement Worldwide. Its headquarters are in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
