We all know New Year's Day and the Lantern Festival. But people hardly know there's another traditional festival related to Chinese New Year — the Nü Wa Festival. In some places, it is celebrated on the 19th day of the New Year. And in other places, it falls on the 25th day. From the name, we can know that the festival is about admiring the goddess, Nü Wa.
So, how do people celebrate this festival?
It might surprise you that they mainly throw pancakes! Nü Wa is a goddess famous for repairing the sky. In the past, people thought the sky was broken when it rained. Nü Wa appeared to solve the problem. Later, people had a similar fear when the rain beat heavily against their houses. They thought throwing the pancakes onto the roofs (屋顶) could stop the rain from breaking the houses. And they are very strict about pancakes. The rounder and thinner, the better. Also, women would put needles (针) in the pancakes. Don't be surprised because needles have been a symbol of Nü Wa fixing the broken sky.
Of course, there are other activities. Some people celebrate it by going outside to shoot. It's not about killing the animals. People admire Nü Wa's great ability to face difficulties and fight against bad people.
However, not many people know or celebrate the festival nowadays. Maybe it's because people can't shoot in the city, or they may be hurt. It's also not good for people to waste food. And the buildings are so tall that it's impossible for pancakes to reach the roofs. Who knows?
