Emily Dickinson was a very famous American poet. She wrote about 2,000 poems, but only four were published in her lifetime. No one wanted to publish her works because it was different from what other poets wrote. After Dickinson died, her poems were finally published. Then she became famous.
Some things about Emily Dickinson’s life were strange and mysterious(神秘的). She was born in 1830, in a rich and well-known family in Amherst, Massachusetts. She had a brother and a sister. Emily was shy and quiet, but she had friends. She went to parties like other young girls of her age and met young men. But she did not fall in love with any of them and never married.
For a long time, Emily Dickinson did not want to see her friends. She stayed at home, read, worked in the garden and wrote poems. Emily wrote her poems everywhere. She wrote them on bits of newspapers or anything that was near. Later, she wrote them out carefully. When she was 28, something happened. Emily was very upset. No one knows why. Some people said she loved a married man. Others said she was unhappy because nobody wanted to publish her poems. She kept on writing anyway.
As she got older, Emily often wanted to be alone. When someone came to her house, she ran upstairs to hide. For the last 16 years of her life, she never left her home. The curtains were always closed. She dressed only in white. One day Emily became ill, but she did not let the doctor go to her room. He could only see her from the doorway.
Dickinson died at the age of 55. Her sister found her poems, and they were finally published. Sadly, Emily Dickinson did not live to enjoy her great success.

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, in 1770. Both his father and grandfather were singers and musicians in the court of the prince of Bonn(波恩王室), Germany. Little Beethoven’s grandfather was a good musician, but he died when Beethoven was three years old. His father, Johann, was not so good a musician as his grandfather and less talented than his son.
Mr. Beethoven could tell that his son had a lot of musical talent. When Beethoven was only four years old, his father started teaching him to play the piano. He was so little that he had to stand on a stool to reach the keys. Johann wasn’t a very good father or teacher. He often drank too much alcohol(酒)and little Beethoven worked very hard. It seemed as if Johann only wanted to make himself famous by trying to become the father of a great musician. At the age of eight, Beethoven had become a pretty good piano player. His father asked people to their home and charged them money to hear his son play. It was not good enough for Beethoven to play for money at his age. Johann really didn’t know how to be a good father and teacher, Johann was not a good husband either. His heavy drinking caused great hardship to the family, especially for his wife. Enjoying a better life at school, with shorter class hours, greater privacy(隐私)and more rights is all you dream of, right?
For students in Shanghai, they are no longer just dreams. This week experts(行家)and law-makers in Shanghai had a meeting to talk about a new law(法律). It is called the“Shanghai Underage Protection Law(上海未成年人保护法)”.
The law says students’ diaries and letters are their secrets and“Nobody can read them if they don’t agree.”
Do your teachers sometimes say something bad to you? Maybe they send you out of the classroom because you fail to finish doing your homework. If this happens in Shanghai, you can stand up and say “No”.
Shanghai students may have less homework because of the law. Class hours may become shorter for juniors next year, down from 45 minutes to 40 minutes in some schools.
The law also talks about students’ health. According to the rules,“Smoking in these places full of kids is not allowed.”That means you can ask your teacher to stop if he smokes in a classroom.
The law makes schools safer for students.“No dancing halls, Internet bars or computer game bars are allowed within(在……以内)200 meters of a school gate.”the law says.
The law is great, right? Many students like it.
“My mom reads my diaries sometimes. I think she will be afraid if I tell her she is doing something against the law.” said Luo Jia, 13, at Shanghai Fuxing Junior School.
If you want to know more about the law, go to “”.
