If English means endless new words, and difficult grammar, you are wrong.Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power.Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter(头脑).This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles(肌肉).
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language.A team led by Dr.Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Englishmen who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language before the age of five,as well as a number of later learners.
Scans(扫描) showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills."Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的)," he said."You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four.Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. "studying a language means you get an entrance to another world," explained the scientists.

In 1901,H.G. Wells, an English writer, wrote a book describing a trip to the moon. When the explorers landed on the moon, they discovered that the moon was full of underground cities. They expressed their surprise to the "moon people" they met.In turn, the "moon people" expressed their surprise."Why," they asked, "are you traveling to outer space when you don't even use your inner space?"
H.G. Wells could only imagine travel to the moon.In 1969,human beings really did land on the moon.People today know that there are no underground cities on the moon. However, the question that the "moon people" asked is still an interesting one.A growing number of scientists are seriously thinking about it.
Underground systems are already in place. Many cities have underground car parks. In some cities, such as Tokyo,Seoul and Montreal, there are large underground shopping areas. The "Channel",a tunnel connecting England and France,is now complete.
But what about underground cities? Japan's Taisei Corporation is designing a network of underground systems, called "Alice Cities".The designers imagine using surface space for public parks and using underground space for flats, offices, shopping, and so on.A solar dome would cover the whole city.
Supporters of underground development say that building down rather than building up is a good way to use the earth's space. The space, they say, can be used for farms, parks, gardens, and wilderness.H.G Wells' "moon people" would agree.Would you?
